It’s time for Kitty Badhands to grow!
With our roots deeply planted in sustainability, it’s time for us to consider what being sustainable means for us from a slightly different angle. We have been so lucky to be able to offer you one-of-a-kind pieces crafted from vintage and heirloom textiles, and we have no plans on stopping, however, like most small businesses, we strive for growth. An aspect of sustainability that is not often discussed in the fashion world is the sustainability of the business itself. Scavenging for vintage textiles and creating one-offs from them brings us much joy, but doing so exclusively has left us hitting a ceiling in several ways.
Firstly, there are only so many vintage textiles worldwide, and of those, we only feel good about cutting into the portion of them that are already damaged and begging for a new life in some way. Secondly, because of the nature of vintage textiles being created for a specific original purpose, such as for bedding or a table covering, their sizes are pre-determined and often don’t give us enough material to create pieces in a wider size range. Lastly, most vintage pieces are one-of-a-kind, and we have the itch to create something beautiful that not just one person gets to take home with them.
We’ve been busy at work, dreaming, experimenting, designing, and sew-sew-sewing to bring you something different, and we are so excited to finally be able to share with you that we will have a new, made-to-order linen collection coming this Saturday!
Let's Talk About Linen:
Linen, the ultimate eco-warrior of fabrics, weaves together sustainability and style like no other. Imagine this: flax, the magical plant behind linen yarn, becomes a carbon vacuum, capturing a remarkable 3.7 tonnes of CO2 per hectare. It's nature's superhero, fighting against climate change in the most fashionable way possible.
But linen’s impact doesn’t stop there. As a rotation crop, flax goes beyond saving the planet and becomes a soil savior. It nourishes the land, replenishing it with essential nutrients and boosting the fertility of subsequent crops, ensuring a thriving environment for all. And let's not forget about linen’s water-wise nature. While other fabrics demand excessive water consumption, linen thrives solely on rainfall. By choosing linen, we consciously choose to conserve water resources and reduce our ecological footprint. It’s a a stylish and sustainable statement, embracing fashion that respected and protects our planet.
Linen is more than just fabric; it symbolizes our commitment to a greener future. With its carbon capture, soil rejuvenation, and water efficiency, linen embodies the essence of sustainable fashion. By embracing linen, we make a bold statement, merging style and consciousness and paving the way for a more sustainable world.
